A new study suggests that the effects of Viagra on erectile dysfunction in men could be much more subtle than previously thought.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.
In a study presented today at the American Urology Society annual meeting, researchers at the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago School of Medicine showed that the erectile function of men who were given Viagra, the generic version of the drug sildenafil, was much more subtle compared to that of healthy men.
"There's been a lot of debate about the differences between the two, but I think the main thing is that the effect is subtle," said study co-author Dr. Michael J. Nissen, M. D., assistant professor of urology at the University of Chicago.
He and colleagues analyzed data from two studies that included 18,000 men: a one-year, placebo-controlled, multicenter study of the effect of sildenafil on erectile function in men with ED, and a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, placebo-controlled, cross-over study of sildenafil in men with ED. Both studies showed a small, but measurable, improvement in erectile function in men taking Viagra, which is approved for use by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998.

Dr. Nissen and Shiffman recruited participants in a large randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over study of sildenafil in men with ED. The study was funded by Lilly and Company and led by the research team at the University of Chicago and the University of California, San Diego.
The study was published in the journalUrology Today, and it was the first study of its kind to test the effects of sildenafil on erectile function in men with ED.
Nissen said that this was the first of his three studies to directly measure the effect of sildenafil on erectile function in men with ED. He said that the results in this study were not statistically significant.
